Chattanooga CARES requires all new volunteers to attend a HIV 101 Training Session.

Chattanooga CARES could not survive without the help of concerned citizens who do everything from transporting clients to the grocery store to cheering participants as they walk in The Strides of March AIDS Walk.Chattanooga CARES asks all volunteers to attend an orientation that includes a session on HIV 101 and the importance of confidentiality to give you a better understanding of how HIV affects our clients.If you are interested in volunteering, please click HERE for a Volunteer Application.
Anyone interested in assisting the agency in educating the community on HIV/AIDS and in meeting the needs of our clients. The following volunteer opportunities are available to those interested:

Client Services

Office Support

Education/Outreach

 

Hospital Visitation

  • Tasks: Visit & provide companionship for clients who are in the hospital or nursing home. The client may have an opportunistic infection or be in the end stages of AIDS.
  • Time needed: : No specific time, but frequent visits are usually needed. Case manager will determine exact need. Flexible schedule.
  • Minimum commitment: : Usually for the length of the hospital stay.
  • Location: hospital or nursing home
  • Qualifications: 18 years old, TB test
  • Training/Preparation: HIV 101, volunteer orientation, possible meeting with case manager about client.
  • Reports: Volunteer-client contact report within 5 days of each visit; Volunteer monthly report

Client Transportation

  • Tasks: Provide transportation for clients with medical appointments. Transportation is usually local, but may also be long distance. Other kinds of transportation are sometimes needed as well, for example grocery shopping or help in moving. Volunteers have the option of being reimbursed for mileage if the transportation is for medical purposes or outside Hamilton County.
  • Time needed: Flexible. When transportation needs arise, volunteer coordinator calls on available volunteers. Volunteer may need to wait on client or possibly return to pick up later. Usually transportation is needed on weekdays.
  • Minimum commitment: none
  • Location: varies
  • Qualifications: 18 years old, valid drivers license, car or truck
  • Training/Preparation: HIV 101, volunteer orientation
  • Reports: Volunteer-client contact report within 5 days of transportation; volunteer monthly report

Case Management Assistant

  • Tasks: Make phone calls once a month to Level 1 clients. (Level 1 clients have a low level of need from Chattanooga CARES.) Each volunteer will be responsible for calling approximately 10 clients per month.
  • Time needed: Flexible schedule arranged by volunteer and clients; approximately 2 hours per month depending on the length of phone calls
  • Minimum commitment: 3 months
  • Location: Calls made from either volunteer’s own home or the CARES office
  • Qualifications: 18 years old
  • Training/Preparation: HIV 101, volunteer orientation, case management assistant training
  • Reports: Abbreviated Volunteer-client contact report; volunteer monthly report

Reception

  • Tasks: answer phones, greet visitors to CARES, help with other office needs such as copying or filing
  • Time needed: Weekdays 8:30-5 PM, when regular receptionist is out of office. Four hour shift 8:30-12:30 or 1-5 is usually required for ease of scheduling.
  • Minimum commitment: none
  • Location: CARES office
  • Qualifications: 16 years old, able to answer phones and transfer calls (training provided)
  • Training/Preparation: HIV 101, volunteer orientation, read volunteer receptionist instructions

Other Office Support

  • Tasks: Many different tasks including computer word processing or data entry, filing, mailings, organization, photocopying, bag condoms, make red ribbons
  • Time needed: flexible; usually weekdays 8:30-5, but some tasks can be picked up to do at home
  • Minimum commitment: none
  • Location: CARES office, occasionally volunteer’s home
  • Qualifications: comfort/expertise/willingness to learn task at hand
  • Training/Preparation: AIDS 101, volunteer orientation

Community Outreach

  • Tasks: Go door to door with CARES educators to pass out HIV prevention information and condoms to area residents
  • Time needed: Saturdays, 10:30-2:30, March – August
  • Minimum commitment: none
  • Location: Chattanooga public housing
  • Qualifications: 18 years old
  • Training/Preparation: HIV 101, volunteer orientation, outreach orientation guidelines given the day of outreach

Bar Outreach

  • Tasks: Go to local bars with CARES educators to pass out information and condoms to bar customers. CARES is invited to the establishments where outreach is being done.
  • Time needed: Evenings 10PM – 1AM, several times a year
  • Minimum commitment: none
  • Location: local bars
  • Qualifications: 21 years old, may not drink alcohol during outreach and may not stay at establishment after outreach is completed.
  • Training/Preparation: HIV 101, volunteer orientation, outreach orientation guidelines given the day of outreach

Outreach to Substance Abusers

  • Tasks: Talk to and educate substance abusers about HIV/AIDS. Volunteers work in pairs.
  • Time: Saturdays 7:30am-10:30am
  • Minimum commitment: One Saturday a month for 6 months
  • Location: Volunteer Treatment Center, methadone clinic
  • Qualifications: 18 years old, former substance abuser and/or very comfortable talking to substance abusers
  • Training/Preparation: HIV 101, Volunteer Orientation, meet with CARES educator who will provide guidance. CARES Educator will accompany team until they are comfortable on their own.

Peer Educators

  • Tasks: Talk to various groups about HIV/AIDS. CARES is invited to come and speak with these groups.
  • Time needed: Flexible, educators are requested at various times.
  • Minimum commitment: One Saturday a month for 6 months
  • Location: Schools, churches, community organizations, other events/locations
  • Qualifications: 18 years old, good public speaking skills and ability to work with diverse populations.
  • Training/ Preparation: HIV 101, volunteer orientation, peer educator training.
